Solo Exhibition
Arario Gallery Shanghai
10/09/2016 - 28/10/2016
The solo exhibition at Arario gallery addresses the complexity of society’s issues in relation to the imposition of modernization and globalization on the everyday environment of many Indonesians. These problems can be related to the shock people experience when they are forced to deal with the new patterns of social interaction that have so quickly come to dominate as a result of inequality in the control of economic resources, the impact of development on the natural environment and the overwhelming flood of information that is rapidly disseminated through digital devices. All of this creates web of interrelated problems. These faceless, veiled, masked people with strange anatomies are the people who are trapped in entropy, manifested in anomalies, in our world which is now increasingly chaotic and confusing. All of this means that the human figure in Eko Nugroho’s work often appears as a strange mutant and always leads our imagination into the impression that there is some kind of threat, danger, violence or horror accompanying their presence. (Words by Enin Supriyanto, “Eko Nugroho. Portraits of Our Incongruous Worlds” in UH-OH UH-OH UH-OH (the world complaining), Exh. Cat., Arario Gallery Shanghai, 2016). Photo Courtes of Arario Gallery.
